Be a member of USFS - to be eligible to compete on behalf of MSUFSC, all skaters must have an active USFS membership. These can be through MSUFSC or any other sanctioned USFS club
Be SafeSport Certified - all MSUFSC members must have completed SafeSport training through USFS prior to the competition season
Be in Good Standing with MSUFSC - no skater with outstanding bills, dues, less than a 2.0 GPA, or not meeting passing credit requirements may compete for MSUFSC
Create Programs - MSUFSC does not choreograph any individual programs, although some MSUFSC members are coaches and are happy to help! Skaters may also reach out to Bozeman Figure Skating coaches for help, or any coaches they may want to work with!
Skaters skating on behalf of MSUFSC are required to compete in (1) Team Maneuvers event (Low, Intermediate, or High, depending on MSUFSC assignment), and (1) Individual Event. An individual event can be at any level from Aspire 3 to Senior, and can be Free Skate, Pattern Dance, Short Program, Free Dance, or any other USFS collegiate event. Skaters are welcome to compete in up to 4 Individual Events per competition.
Competitions for MSUFSC occur across the Western half of the US. The MSUFSC board will decide whether the team will fly or drive to competitions, depending on distance from Bozeman, MT. Through USFS, competitions are allowed to be scheduled or run from 2pm on Friday to 6pm on Sunday of any given competition weekend. MSUFSC will book travel (including flights) around this window as best as possible. Leave times on Friday have been as early as 6:00am, and return times Sunday have been as late as 10:45pm. These times may change in future seasons, but as a general rule of thumb, skaters will miss all MSU instructional time and classes on the Friday of a given competition weekend.
Skaters are given a travel letter through MSU Club Sports, which allows freedom with assignments and coursework, but does not excuse skaters from it. Skaters are required to communicate with professors, TA's, GTA's, etc, prior to competition for classes and coursework they will miss.
Competitions are fun! MSUFSC attends all skater events, allowing for lots of cheering and fun to be had at competitions! Events are scheduled throughout the days of competition, with schedules coming out prior to competition by USFS.
Team Maneuvers is a team-oriented part of collegiate competition, and results from the team event count towards the overall team standing. Skaters skate as a team, showcasing each skater's individual abilities, in elements such as jumps, step sequences, dance elements, and spins. MSUFSC assigns Team Maneuver levels (Low, Intermediate, and High) based on USFS tests passed and the current skills a skater can do.
Yes! Family members are welcome to travel to any competition MSUFSC is competing in. Skaters may not travel seperate from MSUFSC, though, including to and from competition. Information will be provided to interested family or friends when requested.
MSUFSC stays at hotels as close to the rink as possible during competition weekends. Rooms are assigned.
For Individual Events: Skaters are responsible for providing their own dresses, costumes, etc, for individual events. These events are highly personal and tailored to the music and program a skater chooses. Skaters can create costumes themselves, borrow costumes from others, or purchase dresses online or have them made custom. All costs associated with this are not covered by MSUFSC.
For Team Maneuvers Events: All skaters must wear black leggings and the MSUFSC competition jacket, not provided by the team. Skaters will wear a matching team bow, provided by the team.
